marikuruko

marikuruko is a small sticker business I started in 2021. Much of my illustrations and designs are inspired by East Asian (predominantly Japanese) culture. The name marikuruko comes from combining my middle name, Mariko, and last name, Kuruma.

I've always wanted to make stickers, not for the monetary value but for the joy it brings me. I love how stickers are such a small thing but have the power to bring a smile to people's faces. With marikuruko, I was able to finally transform my illustrations into something tangible for everyone of all ages to enjoy while also creating my own brand image to accompany the designs.

DROP ONE: いただきます!

My first drop, いただきます! (itadakimasu – "Let's eat!" in Japanese) was inspired by different desserts and popular snacks. This drop, as well as the following drop, features colorful, nostalgic designs.

It's important to me that some of the designs have Japanese writing on them, as it reminds me of my cultural roots while also bringing a sense of authenticity.

DROP TWo: かんぱい!

My second drop, かんぱい! (kanpai – "Cheers!" in Japanese) was inspired by different drinks. I wanted to appeal to multiple age groups with this drop while also maintaining the same style as the previous.

SOCIAL MEDIA ASSETS

Because marikuruko is also a brand, I wanted all of my social media assets to have a general theme and consistency. I used the same color palette and typefaces; both of which communicate the fun, nostalgic, and youthful energy that are featured in my sticker designs.

BUSINESS CARDs & thank you notes

With every sticker order, I include a business card and a personalized thank you note for the buyer. Packaging is super important, and I feel like both of these cards accompany the stickers perfectly to complete the orders. Again, using the same color palette, layout, and typeface for these cards, I want each order to feel cohesive with the stickers customers are receiving.
